🕯️ Creating a Grimoire: The Magical Heart of My Ivy Cassidy World

What Is a Grimoire?

Have you heard the term ‘grimoire’ and wondered, what is that? I bet you’re not alone! Let me explain it. A lot of people think a grimoire is a book of spells, but I think it’s so much more than that. I see it as a living, breathing reflection of your magical path—whatever that might look like. While it was traditionally used by witches, herbalists, and spiritual seekers, I look at the modern-day grimoire as a space to gather wisdom, document rituals, explore the unseen, and reconnect with the cycles of nature. That’s my purpose with it in my life.

In House of Spells and Secrets, the grimoire isn’t just a tool; it’s a character in its own right. It was the trusted companion of Biddy Early and is a record keeper of magic, mystery, and ancestral memory.

Why I’m Creating My Own Grimoire

As Ivy Cassidy (and as Melissa Bourbon), I’m deeply inspired by history, seasonal magic, folklore, intuition, and the beauty of the natural world. The grimoire I’m making is my way of weaving all those threads together into something tangible. It’s a book of wonder, rooted in the mystical and in creativity.

I’m creating my grimoire in five parts. The first section is a big-picture look at my life during the making of the book of shadows. After that, it’s broken into four additional sections—one for each season (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter).

🍂 Right now, at the beginning of my grimoire creation process, I’m starting with fall. It’s my favorite season, and as we approach the -er months (all my faves!), the time of shadow work, warm candlelight, and letting go feels right.

A Peek Inside: The Beginning Pages

For me, each page of the grimoire is a spell in itself. Some are handwritten, others collaged, and still others painted. I will be including:

  • Seasonal blessings and poetry
  • Seasonal plants, flowers, and food
  • Moon cycle study
  • Magical herb profiles
  • Artistic spreads and collages
  • Symbols that speak to me like keys, birds, ivy, stars, tarot
  • My whispered thoughts woven between the pages

How to Start Your Own Grimoire

If you’re feeling called to begin your own grimoire (and I hope you are because it’s such a cool experience), you don’t need fancy tools or a perfect aesthetic. All you need is intention and a sense of wonder.

Here are a few steps to help you get started:

  1. Choose your format – a journal, sketchbook, binder, or digital notebook. Any of these will work! It doesn’t have to be fancy.
  2. Set your intention – What will your grimoire hold? Who is it for? Why are you creating it?
  3. Begin with a blessing – Include in your book with a short poem, invocation, or ritual that underscores your intention.
  4. Let it grow slowly – Start with one season, moon cycle, or spell, then let it develop from there.
  5. Infuse it with you – Your drawings, your words, your beliefs.

If you let it, your grimoire will become your magical fingerprint. It will be unrepeatable and utterly yours.

The Magic Lives in the Pages

In a world that moves fast and demands polished perfection, I believe a grimoire invites you to slow down, tap into creativity, and remember. It doesn’t have to be about spells. For me, it’s about reclaiming the sacred in my everyday life, and in the world around me. It’s about remembering who I am, what I believe, what’s important to me, and what makes my world magical and unique.

It can be the same for you.

Whether you’re a seasoned witch, witch-curious, or just want to live a magically mystical and interesting life (like me!), I invite you to create your own grimoire…and to follow along as I share mine.

With love and magic,
